SLP: English Writing Pre-Test

Commenced on the 28th July 2010, all English periods were used solely for the English writing pre-test. All levels from pra classes to Year 6’s were involved. The test was all about composition focusing on the way of styles the pupils write as well as to see the level of ability writing English composition through creativity of content, organisation of story sequence, language use and the way the story was presented in writing.

Each level did composition writing based on the kids’ level of classes. Pra classes just did the oral phonics and phrase writing which the example was already prepared by the teacher. Year 2 and Year 3 did the simple picture composition writing where they just needed to describe the pictures by writing.

Year 4, 5 and 6 did on the picture composition writing where the level of thinking and creativity was more at a higher level compared to the lower levels to describe and add additional ideas using pictures as guides to create original masterpiece writing. What was expected from the upper primary children was that they were able to attract people to read their writings with creativity.

The next task will be data collecting and writing analysis that will commence on Tuesday, 3rd August 2010. . The analysis will be emphasizing on Quality of Ideas (QOI), Story Shape and Structure (SSS), Grammar (GMR) and Vocabulary and Spelling (VS). When the analysis is done, pupils will be sorted into level of ability and level of English Language achievement benchmark. From here, it will be known then where and what the weaknesses for each student to be strengthen on.

SLP: Educational Visit to Majlis Ilmu

23 pupils and most of the teachers from the school made an educational visit to International Convention Centre (ICC) for the Knowledge Convention (Majlis Ilmu) event being held currently until 1 August. The visit was part of the School Leadership Program aiming to expose pupils to real observation and gaining knowledge from the exhibitions showed at the place. The batch departed at 1.30pm from school using two buses and headed to ICC in Berakas.

Teacher-in-charge, Cikgu Lela binti Mamit organised the visit a success and fortunately she was interviewed by RTB asking her view and perception about the Knowledge Convention occasion. Pupils were required to answer 5 guided questions about the visit and it was a task for them to gain and record information as if they were reporters for the school's newsletter. This correlated to the school's aim of improving writing skills where English was the medium for writing.

With the exposure the kids were expected to be able to record and taking general information by relating to the occasion in its aim being organised. Pupils also had a chance to try one exhibit on education where they tried and play around the interactive boards. Other exhibits include His Majesty's journey being the great ruler, Brunei history, Brunei Malay Islamic Monarchy (Melayu Islam Beraja) concepts and products marketing.

School's SLP English Writing Project

School's SLP project on assessing and measuring pupils' performance in English Language writing, the meeting happened yesterday, 26 July 2010, in the conference room at 2pm. Cikgu Hamdiah binti Haji Amat and Cikgu Roseadah facilitated and explained about the tasks that would be carried out for the SLP project.

Attending the meeting were teachers who were already assigned with respective tasks according to the RASI system. The meeting focused on writing where pre-tests for every level were standardised starting from Pra classes to Year 6's.

What was aimed was to look for the weaknesses the students were having currently in writing skills using English language as the medium. Heather pointed out that the Pra classes would still doing on the phonics by oral communication and writing given phrases by specifying grammar structures. Year 1 could be having the same techniques as in Pra classes as phonics were still incorporated in the syllabus. Year 2 and Year 3 would be doing simple sentence structures by describing pictures in the writing, as pointed by Cikgu Kathy.

Cikgu Yusnani would be doing the English pre-test writing for Higher Special Need (HSN) pupils but she still needed help about the pupils' English performance from respective English teachers.

The pre-tests for all levels would commence on this Wednesday, 28th July 2010. Next tasks would be data collecting and analysing the pre-tests to find out the main weaknesses that in turn would be the main target to improve the writing skills among the pupils. Data collecting and analysing would commence on next Tuesday, 3 August 2010.
